Volume 6, Issue 2 (Summer)

Cover story:

Little Blue World Online A Look Back into the Fires of Pele by Renee Roberson

"The song shows the double standard of how young girls and women can be condemned in society for craving the attention and touch of the opposite sex. And if they do happen to find conspirators who share those desires, they don't always have happy endings."

Caught in the Fey by Maureen Paley

Dancing Ferret's Patrick Rodgers on Organizing a Tribute CD "We'd also really like people to view this release as a cohesive whole rather than the sum of its parts. It's natural that Tori's fans will be most interested in her track, and fans of The Cruxshadows will be most interested in their track, but this is really meant to be enjoyed as an entire piece, with Neil's notes and Dave's artwork and all the music together (plus, of course, the source material)."

Who's Who on Where's Neil by Maureen Paley

"Gaiman is involved in a concept album that includes him and other authors (including Poppy Z. Brite, Charles de Lint and Lemony Snicket) writing lyrics for the upcoming [Future Bible Heroes] album The Hidden Variable."

Sweet Little Stories: Where's Neil When You Need Him? by Yvette Perez

"Tori has made it abundantly clear over the years—and nowhere more clearly than in the recent book Piece by Piece —that for her, it all comes down to archetypes— to the stories and myths that are at the core of human existence. And Neil has shown in his own work that his focus is not so much the truly "fantastic," but the place where reality and myth overlap and coexist."

Neil Gaiman 101 by Lynne Stahl

An (abbreviated) Annotated Bibliography. "1993: Death: The High Cost of Living: This miniseries follows Gaiman's hugely popular character Death, first introduced in Sandman. Here, she encounters a pseudo-suicidal teenage boy, and they end up on a quest for a bag lady's heart. Includes a foreword by Tori Amos and an afterword about AIDS and safe sex."

Oh My Goth: Checking in with Voltaire by Angela Reid

"When asked to work on the Tori disc, I immediately went through my mental Rolodex of what song I might want to cover and "Caught A Lite Sneeze" was the obvious choice for me. Besides being a big fan of the melody, I had been going through a really hard time (at the tail end of a 12-year relationship that was crumbling) and the lyrics seemed particularly poignant and personal to me."

Feature articles:

The Harpsichord in the Twentieth Century (and Beyond) by Lydia Simon

"Once the harpsichord was reestablished it was only a matter of time before it made its way into popular music. The Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Stone Ponies (with Linda Ronstadt), Judy Collins, the Yardbirds, Queen,, the Stranglers and Jimi Hendrix all used harpsichord on individual (or in some cases multiple) songs before Tori released Boys for Pele."

Tori in Your Pocket by Jenn K. Lee

"If your palette is primarily suited for Tori,… a subscription service isn't exactly money well spent."

The Evolution of the Harpsichord: Part 2 by Lydia Simon

Because of the harpsichord's clarity of tone, it was especially well suited to compositions featuring counterpoint and consequently it was the dominant keyboard instrument of the Baroque era.

Multimedia:

Reviews: As Heard On by John Higdon

"Music is everywhere these days; you never know where you're going to first hear that next great new artist. TV has been particularly helpful in this regard. Not only do shows often promote artists by playing their songs during important scenes, they sometimes even announce the songs they played."

Ears with Feet:

Focus on Michael Whitehead

"When I began [the Dent], I had no idea what it would become. I just wanted to share my love of Tori's music and help gather news items and concert reviews in one place."
